Each new day is a gift. One easily taken for granted. A new day, a new battle. But the first battle is not with others, it’s with yourself. It begins with the first rays of light, even before the sunrises the light peels the night sky away from the horizon. The temptation to stay in the comfort of your bed. The morning routine is not a chore; it’s a sacred ritual.
Body - The Three Pillars:
Awakening the body (Physical Discipline) Each day is an opportunity to be intentional about the lives we want to master. Rising early to make time to stretch, like the unfolding of a flower, to prepare the body for the day. This is not about being a great athlete, but about being functional. We must be able to move freely, without pain into our old age. This is the foundation of longevity. A simple walk has tremendous benefits. The early morning light hits your optic nerve in your eyes, triggering the hormone cortisol to wake you fully. It also resets your circadian rhythm, every cell in your body is controlled by this internal body clock. Without realising it you’re helping improve your sleep patterns with no more effort than stepping outside and walking.
Awakening the Min (Mental Discipline) The quiet of the morning is magical, precious. Before the noise of the world begins, you have time for yourself. This is especially more notable if you have restrained form opening your smart device to consume any form of social media or sneak peak at overnight emails. Resist! - for sure you have the remainder of the day for that. Hold onto the space of the morning. This is the time for a quiet mind, for a moment to breathe and prepare mentally for the day. You are not reacting to the world, you are intentionally stepping into it. This the practice of Rei, the virtue of respect - respect of your own time and your own peace.
Awakening the Spirit (Spiritual Discipline) Holding yourself to a higher standard of health and wellness is about being true to yourself. You know instinctively that you desire a life free from pain, able to move functionally into your older age. I take a sauna and cold plunge each morning. A test of will, a small does of hardship to strengthen the spirit. Turning the hot water to cold at the end of your morning shower has the same effect. This is how you foster discipline, how you learn to be comfortable with discomfort. A lesson a true warrior must learn. The Lesson of Gi, the virtue of integrity and justice.
Bringing it all together
This is not just about a healthy body, it’s about building a disciplined life. Make the morning your own, to suit your life. Make it deliberate and with purpose. It’s a daily promise to yourself, a promise to be strong, to be resilient, and to live with purpose. This is the true meaning of discipline and it’s a gift we can give ourselves, one morning at a time. One morning after another.
